Your electric panel is on the wall in an out-of-the-way place which is typically your garage or laundry room. You may not think much about it until there is an issue. However it is important to the safety of you and your family to have an up to date system. There are a few important reasons why you may need to upgrade your electric panel.
Safety
The number one reason to replace your electric panel is safety. If the panel is outdated or if there’s a problem your family could be in danger of electric shock or fire. If you have had any issues with shocks or fires you definitely need to have your panel replaced. This is not a DIY job either you must call in a professional electrician.
Energy efficiency
If your home is overloaded with extension cords and power strips your system could be overwhelmed. You may need to add breakers to handle the electrical load of newer appliances and electronics. Hiring an electrician to install upgraded breakers will increase the energy efficiency.
Outdated
Depending on the age of your home your entire electrical system could be outdated. Newer items such as appliances and electronics do not work well with an outdated system. If you have an older home and your system is outdated you must have it replaced. This will increase your energy efficiency as well as the safety in your home.
Remodeling
When you remodel or add an addition to your home you are likely adding additional outlets and possibly electronics. Your system may not be equipped to handle these newer circuits. You will likely need to add breakers or upgrade your system.
Damage
If your current electrical panel has any type of damage this is a sure sign that you are in need of replacement. If your lights flicker when you start a larger appliance or if your breakers are frequently tripping you will need an upgrade. Another sign that you need an upgrade is if your panel has no more room for expansion. Furthermore if the current panel does not meet safety codes you will likely be required to have it replaced as per your homeowners insurance.
